Cleveland Sews

by Sharie Renee

Supported by the Cosmic Bobbins Foundation and other partner organizations, Cleveland Sews brings together employers, trainers, and apprentices to work collaboratively, bridging vulnerable populations into sustainable work positions within the sewing industry. As we empower individuals through the development of trade skills, Cleveland Sews is revitalizing communities and the sewing industry, itself.

A collaborative hub where the art of sewing creates sustainable incomes for economically disenfranchised adults and youth, Cleveland Sews supports job placement, entrepreneurial ventures, and its own production house. Pilot projects include work with Cleveland’s refugee & immigrant communities, at-risk youth, senior citizens, and other vulnerable populations.

Through Cleveland Sews, the Cosmic Bobbins Foundation has created a network and gathering place for community members to revitalize the lost art of sewing. Our collaborative model invites partners to share the table, connecting existing structures with new opportunities for capacity, growth, connection, and re-imagination.

Apprentices participate in a rigorous 160-hour workforce development training program on industrial sewing machines. The program includes work-focused language and employment work content. The program is designed so that graduates acquire employment placement with a local factory. Graduates of the program receive a paid internship with a direct pipeline to employment placement. Participants may choose to work on additional program options in tandem with this direct placement program.
